Trouble Codes

The sensors which monitor the engine performance send data back to the ECM. The data is necessary to send commands out from the ECM to change the operating parameters of the engine to maintain optimum performance and efficiency. The on-board computer and sensors also provide a diagnostic service in the event of a failure of the system. Any problems encountered by the ECM cause a Trouble Code to be stored in the Computer's memory. This Trouble Code causes the Check Engine Soon light to go on, which alerts the driver to a fault in one of the information sensor circuits or the ECM itself.

To retrieve this information from the computers memory, the ECM must be put into the Diagnostic Mode. The following sections describe the diagnostic procedures in detail, highlighting those areas which are monitored by the ECM Diagnostic facility.
